1998 history

Mark McGwire: The qustion of the year was, could McGwire hit 62? McGwire mocked the question, hitting an incredible 70 over the fence. Four of them went more than 500 ft! The St. Louis Cardinals' batting practice became a show in itself with crowded outfield seats. His practice shots got bigger cheers than real ones at most stadiums. McGwire showed what a true sports hero he is by the way he handled the attention with class and with respect for his worthy rival, Sammy Sosa.

MICHAEL JORDAN  snagged victory at the last second. His sixth championship of the decade came over a favored Utah Jazz team. Who was putting his Vegas money against him? Smarter to bet he'd score 45 points to win Game 6 and another ring.

On June 7, in Texas, three white men chained an African American named James Byrd to a pickup truck and dragged him to his death.

In Oct. 7, two men in Wyoming beat up gay teenager Matthew Shepard and left him to die while tied to a fence. He was found 18 hours later and stayed in coma for five days. Then he died.

AIR pollution kills up to 24 000 people each year in Britain, according to a report commissioned by the government.

The Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants says that low-level ozone, created by sunlight acting on vehicle exhaust fumes, causes 12 500 premature deaths each year. Sulphur dioxide claims another 3500 lives.

Nearly four years ago calculations conducted for New Scientist estimated that the fine particulates known as PM10s—also mostly produced by vehicles—kill around 10 000 people a year ("Dying from too much dust", New Scientist, 12 March 1994, p12). The new report comes up with a figure of 8100.

The report also estimates the number of hospital admissions each year caused by air pollution, attributing 10 500 to PM10s, 9900 to ozone and 3500 to sulphur dioxide.

DANCE OF THE VALADORES

Below are images from the Dance of the Valadores. 5 men climb to the top of a 100' pole. One man stands at the middle of pole and dances on top while playing a high pitched flute. The other 4 men tie themselves to ropes, then lower themselves off the back of the square rotating platform. They spin out from the pole, untill they finally reach the ground. Nice air aerobics. At the end the leader lowers himself down one of the ropes. A must see event.

Mexico: Wages, Maquiladoras, NAFTA

Mexico's Foreign Relations Secretariat (SRE) in January 1998 published the new dual nationality law, which becomes effective March 20, 1998. Mexicans who possess or have acquired another citizenship will have to present a Mexican citizenship certificate or passport or birth certificate when they participate in any service exclusively for Mexican citizens.

The new law outlines procedures for becoming a Mexican national. Foreigners must live in Mexico for five years, speak Spanish, know Mexican history and "be integrated into the national culture." Foreigners who marry Mexicans must prove they have lived with their spouse in Mexico for the last two years to obtain citizenship.

Wages. Mexico has three minimum wages based on the costs of living in various places. In January 1998, each was raised less than the inflation rate; Mexican wages remain about one-tenth of US wages. In 1996, according to the US Department of Labor, the hourly compensation of Mexican production workers was $1.50 an hour compared to $17.74 for US workers. For many Mexicans, wages in early 1998 are 15 to 25 percent less in real terms than in early 1994, before the peso devaluation.
